Gibson Bob Marley Special

Junior Special..the first time I heard that name used was in the mid 90’s Some Junior Specials were even called SLs because is used poly finish instead of laquer (SL= Sans Laquer). I think they started off with p100’s and later with humbuckers.

Some diehards dont like the name Junior Special as it adds to the confusion, because they argue it’s neither a Junior nor Special by vintage specs. It’s more of a modern, updated version of the Special.

Junior Specials differ from vintage spec, with TOM bridge, no fretboard binding, 60’s taper neck, cutaway tapers flush with the neck, and a belly cut on the backside
It is interesting that Gibson has 2 versions available The Les Paul Jr Special that was at Wildwood and Guitar Center has the belly cut but the one I got from Music123 has a slab body with no belly cut.

Gibson Bob Marley Lp Special

For sale is my Gibson Les Paul Special serial number 92948421 which dates it to 1998. The guitar was originally in a teal green finish but it was stripped & oiled by a local luthier on my request. I think this has given the guitar an incredibly unique ‘vibe’ with plenty of ‘mojo’ & I know this from the enormous amount of gigs that I’ve used it at with the equally enormous amount of compliments it’s recieved. There’s some pick rash developing just above the scratchplate area but again I think this adds to the guitar’s appeal. The laquer on the front of the headstock has started to crack which again is another ‘mojo’ feature & something that my guitar tech told me was quite common with Gibsons.

Gibson celebrated the late Bob Marley with this limited-edition, Bob Marley Les Paul Special, a reissue built to the exact specifications of his guitar on display at the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Jamaica. The solidbody mahogany guitar from Gibson’s Custom Shop, Art & Historic division replicates a number of unique appointments including Marley’s trademark white binding on the headstock and fingerboard – now yellowed with age – and small pearl block inlays similar to a mid-1960s ES-335.
Gibson duplicates these characteristics as well as the aluminum pickguard and aluminum football-shaped switchwasher around the 3-way selector switch. A carefully aged Cherry finish as well as marks and scratches copied from the original instrument complete the well-worn look and feel of the guitar; Marley’s signature appears on the headstock. This guitar is #98 of only 200 ever made. This edition is now sold-out making this a rare find.

Bob Marley Gibson Guitar

“This is one of those Custom Shop Gibson that really works because it is unique and wonderful. It feels aged and played it thanks to the very thin finish, it’s a joy to grab this neck. The pickups sound amazing and go from twang to cry, perfect for the versatile player. Plus this Bob Marley Limited Edition has a look that’s perfect for the stage. Collectible, but infinitely playable as well. “ – Paul Heumiller
